Tooth Whitening

Sandra C. Hoffmeier, DDS, New York City Prosthodontist; Cosmetic Dentistry

In our practice we provide several different types of tooth whitening (or bleaching) treatment that are tailored to our patients needs and affordability.

Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  In our practice we prescribe home tooth whitening as well as in-office systems.

Tooth whitening does not work on fillings and crowns. After teeth are bleached, any old fillings and crowns need to be replaced if you want the restorations to match the bleached teeth.

If the bleaching treatment you have is at-home only or if it is the in-office type (Deep Bleaching), periodic at home touch ups will be needed in order to maintain your whitened teth.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications such as tetracycline.
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth
